The HIG podium count for August 5, 2018

Another jammed packed weekend of racing with athletes racing on opposite sides of the globe. First, there was Ironman Boulder 70.3, our hometown ‘half distance championships’ (as the local joke goes). As always, a solid few contenders from both the pro women and men’s fields, and being that it’s Boulder, most of these contenders are local to the area and know these roads like the back of their hand. Ellie Salthouse knew coming in she was finally healthy and hungry to rev the engine 1 month before the 70.3 world champs. She took the lead early on the bike and decimated the field that included Olympians and 70.3 all-stars. On the men’s side, Sam Appleton, fresh off the win last weekend in Santa Rosa, came out firing and led the swim, smoked the bike and led the run until after the half way mark, when he was caught by the fast moving Matt Charbot, Ben Hoffman, and Callum Millard. Hoffman and Millard broke free and the end and Hoffman took a close 2^nd. A strong sign for the top American in heading into Ironman Hawaii in early October. Charbot took the bronze medal and rounded out a nice 1-2-3 for the weekend in Boulder. Solid performance for Appo who finished 4^th as well as a top 10 for the young Jake Montgomery.

One time zone west of here, 4x Triathlon World Champion Lesley Paterson took the win at the Xterra Portland. The Scot is back to her winning ways, having a great 2018 season as we head into Nationals next month and World Champs this October.

Over in Asia, 2018’s Unstoppable Mom Radka Kalefeldt stormed to victory at the Ironman 70.3 Asia Pac Championships in the Philippines.This was Kalefeldt’s 4^th and most significant win since returning from maternity leave and giving birth in January. Unreal! Respect to the Rads!

On the Men’s side, Mauricio Mendez clinched his most significant 70.3 win to date, taking the win over 4x defending champ Tim Reed and other experienced 70.3 superstars like Craig Alexander, Tyler Butterfield, Braden Currie, Brent McMahon etc etc.Despite being most known as an off-road triathlete, the youngest ever Xterra World Champion is proving that he is a force at the 70.3 distance, notching his second victory this year in the Philippines and a winning season that includes a plethora of wins and podiums for the Mexican wonder kid. 5x Ironman and 70.3 World Champ Craig Alexander (45) was top 5.
