Radka and Phillips Take Down Wanaka
The unstoppable Radka Kahlefeldt continues the 'Tour de Supermom' with a 2020 home opener win at the Challenge Wanaka half. Existing the water 1 second behind the leader, Radka quickly got to work on the bike maintaining an ideal pole position with the second fastest bike split of the day (2:36:33) and first athlete into T2. As usual, Rads run was a force to be reckoned with as she crossed the finish line first with a 3 minute 19 second win over 2nd place finisher Hannah Wells. Radka's 1:25:28 run split was the days quickest by far, setting up the Czech superstar for a perfect lead into Ironman New Zealand in early march. Ironman New Zealand will be Kahlefeldt's first full distance race.
Kiwi engineer turned professional triathlete Mike Phillips opened his 2020 season in Wanaka with podium performance. Existing 1-2 out of the water with race winner Braden Currie, Phillips was first off the bike and out on the run course with a 2:12:52 bike split. Just coming off a run injury, Phillis was caught fairly quickly by race winner Currie and Aussie Matt Burton on the run but ended up rounding out the podium with a 3rd place finish. Like Kahlefeldt, Phillips will be lining up at Ironman New Zealand at the start of March, where he will be defending his 2019 title.
